Helicopter power line inspections to help ensure safety and reliability

CASPER, Wyo. — Rocky Mountain Power crews will use a helicopter to inspect power lines from above in parts of central and northern Wyoming and near Billings, Montana. The line surveys will take place during the week of Oct. 2 – 6, weather permitting. Routine inspections are conducted to help ensure safety and reliability of power lines by checking for damage that can occur from weather or other causes.

“Helicopter surveys of power lines are performed periodically,” said Jon Andersen, power line patrolman for Rocky Mountain Power. “The work will take at least a couple of days to complete and may require that the helicopter hover for a time near the lines.  Residents can be assured this is a normal procedure and there is no cause for concern.”

Crews will inspect lines in, nearby and along routes between the following cities: Casper, Buffalo, Sheridan and Gillette, WY; and Billings, MT. The utility has obtained work clearances and has approved flight plans with the Federal Aviation Administration.
