Este blends renewable energy into sustainable recipe

SALT LAKE CITY — Este Pizza Co. is showing its commitment to the environment by purchasing Blue Sky renewable energy from Utah Power. Located at 2021 S. Windsor St., Suite A, in Salt Lake City, owner David Heiblim says the restaurant does “everything with the environment in mind.”

“We work to conserve water – which is a big issue here – and try to recycle and to save electricity as much as possible,” Heiblim said of his 19-month-old pizza restaurant. “We try to buy as many natural ingredients as possible and list a large number of vegetarian and vegan offerings.”

Heiblim’s business philosophy includes buying Blue Sky wind energy. “I went to the University of Utah and was an active member of the Terra Firma Club,” Heiblim said. “One of our campaigns was to get the university to buy a large amount of wind power.”

Utah Power’s Blue Sky program gives both large and small customers a way to increase the demand for clean, renewable wind energy and to take advantage of its environmental benefits. It is sold in 100 kilowatt-hour increments, called blocks, for $1.95 per block per month in addition to a customer’s regular bill.

Este is buying 35 blocks of Blue Sky wind energy per month, which offsets 42 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. That has the environmental benefit of planting 16 acres of trees or not driving 89,985 miles.

Wind is an attractive form of energy generation because it helps reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Just one block of Blue Sky has the same environmental benefit of either planting about a half acre of trees or not driving 2,500 miles. Enrollment is optional, and customers can increase their participation or withdraw at any time.
