Staker & Parson Companies makes sizeable renewable power commitment with Blue Sky

OGDEN, Utah — One of the region’s largest rock products, concrete and asphalt companies is making a big contribution to the environment. Staker & Parson Companies recently became a visionary participant in Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky renewable energy program, buying 750 blocks of wind power each month.

“Our commitment to renewable energy resources is going to continue,” said John Parson, CEO. “Long term, the incremental cost of renewable generation is Staker & Parson’s investment in the future. We see this investment as a means to help the environment, expand the development of this renewable resource and benefit the communities we serve.”

Staker & Parson is the Intermountain Region’s premiere producer of quality sand & rock products, ready mix concrete, asphalt, paving, and construction employing over 2,000 people at more than 30 locations in Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Nevada.

“We have a corporate responsibility to promote a clean environment and these investments provide an opportunity to meet this responsibility,” said Justin Lowery, energy specialist for Staker & Parson.  He said that during the past two years, Staker & Parson has invested $1.2 million to understand ways to minimize its historical energy consumption patterns and make improvements. According to the company, Staker & Parson’s energy efficiency investments equate to 2,976,455 kilowatt hours in savings each year. These energy savings have contributed to the reduction of 4,699,822 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

“By buying 750 blocks of Blue Sky each month, we are offsetting 75 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per month, which has the environmental benefit of eliminating more than 160,600 automobile miles or planting more than 14,730 trees,” Lowery said.

Blue Sky energy comes from wind power. Wind is an attractive form of energy generation because it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Wind produces no air pollutants, wastewater, smog or acid rain. Blue Sky helps spur renewable power development and supports additional amounts of clean, renewable energy.

Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program gives all customers, large and small, a way to grow the demand for wind energy and take advantage of its environmental benefits. Participation in Blue Sky is affordable. Rocky Mountain Power sells Blue Sky in 100-kilowatt-hour block increments for $1.95 each, in addition to a customer’s regular monthly electric bill. Buying just one block of Blue Sky a month for a year has the same environmental benefit of either not driving 2,500 miles or planting a half acre of trees. Large customers can buy renewable power in bulk at a discount through Blue Sky QS (Quantity Savings).

While Rocky Mountain Power already buys renewable energy for its customers, Blue Sky brings even more wind power into the system and encourages wind farm development. Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky customers added two new wind farms to the voluntary program’s renewable portfolio, buying energy from the Pleasant Valley Wind Energy facility near Evanston, Wyo., and from Nine Canyon Wind Project near Kennewick, Wash.
