Park City Mountain Resort supports the environment with Blue Sky

PARK CITY, Utah – Park City Mountain Resort supports the Utah community’s environmental commitment by purchasing renewable Blue Sky energy. The resort is currently purchasing 955 blocks of wind-generated power each month through Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program.

Park City Mountain Resort has more than doubled its commitment to supporting renewable energy through Blue Sky since it first enrolled in the program in 2003. The resort’s initial purchase commitment of 407 blocks was in support of Park City’s Blue Sky Challenge, a citywide effort to encourage Park City residents and businesses to support renewable wind energy by purchasing blocks of Blue Sky.

Helping the community’s efforts to extend the use of renewable energy sources is important to Park City Mountain Resort. In addition to purchasing Blue Sky, the resort invests every year to protect and enhance the local environment in multiple ways, including erosion control efforts, revegetation and silviculture.

Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program gives customers a way to grow the demand for clean, renewable wind energy and to take advantage of its environmental benefits. It is sold in 100-kilowatt hour (kwh) increments, called “blocks,” for $1.95 per block per month in addition to a customer’s regular bill. Business customers can make bulk purchases of Blue Sky for less under the utility’s Blue Sky QS (Quantity Savings) option.

The resort’s commitment to purchase 14 percent of its annual power from renewable sources does increase its power expense, the resort explained. However, the environmental impact is equivalent to planting 450 acres of trees each year and the resort’s current Blue Sky purchase helps to offset 95.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each month.

With 3,300 acres of groomed runs, bumps, bowls, terrain parks and Utah’s famous powder, Park City Mountain Resort is consistently ranked among the top 10 ski resorts in North America by SKI magazine, and voted as one of the top four terrain parks by Snowboarder and Transworld Snowboarding magazines.
