The Canyons Resort
has joined forces with Park City to participate in the “Blue Sky Challenge.” The Blue Sky Challenge is a city-wide effort
to encourage Park City residents and businesses to support renewable wind energy, by purchasing blocks of Blue Sky energy
from Rocky Mountain Power.
The resort is purchasing 282 blocks of Blue Sky, which puts them at the program's "Champion" level. The purchase represents
6 percent of the resort’s energy usage.
“We are excited to play an integral role in the Blue Sky program,” said Scott Pierpont, General Manager of The Canyons.
“This is an environmentally beneficial program, and we want to be part of the long-term solution whenever possible."
Blue Sky gives customers a way to grow the demand for wind energy and take advantage of its environmental benefits. It is
sold in 100-kilowatt-hour block increments for $1.95 each, in addition to a customer’s regular monthly electric bill. Purchasing
one block of Blue Sky energy over a period of a year is equivalent to offsetting more than a ton of carbon dioxide emissions,
which is equivalent to not driving more than 1,800 miles or to planting almost a third of an acre of trees.
“Our involvement is just another example of the importance The Canyons
places on positive environmental practices,” Pierpont added. The Canyons
was awarded the Silver Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence in Visual Impact in 2001 by Mountain Sports Media.
The Canyons’
renewable wind energy purchase is equivalent to offsetting more than a ton of carbon monoxide emissions.
The Canyons
is the newest and largest single ski resort in Utah, having opened November 28, 2003. The Canyons
is owned by American Skiing Company, headquartered in Park City, Utah. It is one of the largest operators of alpine ski,
snowboard and golf resorts in the United States.
