First Unitarian first with Blue Sky

Hopeful that its example will inspire other congregations to action, the First Unitarian Church is Utah’s first to purchase Blue Sky wind energy through Rocky Mountain Power. Church officials say the decision to purchase renewable power is in keeping with the organization’s environmental ministry.

"Environmental stewardship and social justice is a large part of what we see as our mission," explained Susan Helier, recent president of the church’s board of trustees. "This really allows us to walk the talk and we’re hopeful that it sets an example for other churches and other public buildings."

Salt Lake’s First Unitarian Church is the newest Blue Sky business participant in the state and the first church to sign-on in the region. Located at 569 S. 1300 E., the church is purchasing 18 blocks of Blue Sky wind power each month, which is the equivalent to 25 percent of its monthly usage. The purchase places it in the champion level participant category.

The environmental benefits are equivalent to planting nearly six acres of trees or not driving 32,400 miles for a year. In addition, First Unitarian’s purchase prevents 15 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

We evaluated and budgeted money for Blue Sky during our budget cycle," Helier said. "Ideally, each year we hope to increase it until we are purchasing the equivalent of all our usage on clean, renewable sources of energy."
